Key Words in your Website

Key words

There is an old saying “In any business it is all about three things, Location, Location and Location.” With customers today relying more and more to the internet for product information the only thing that had changed is your location is now on the major search engines. Preferably on page one

A great web site serves as your store front in the cyber marketplace but no matter how wonderful your website is if customers never see it they can’t buy from you. You must be located high in the search engines for customers to see you

When conceptualizing your website you should think as much about keywords as the actual design. Your key words need to be distributed throughout your text. If you have a 5 page website repeat this on every page. A simple easy to navigate website with good keywords is the formula for success. Whoever you choose to do your web site design must have a good knowledge of this.

Here is an example of the text for my website “The Queen’s Residence Historic Tavern”

Come Ye Weary Travelers for Rest and Merriment at the

Wild Turkey Tavern

Discover one of Ypsilanti’s “hidden treasures”! Gather your friends and co-workers and enjoy period cuisine* and entertainment in authentic atmosphere. The 18th Century Wild Turkey Tavern is located in The historic Queen’s Residence Bed and Breakfast at 220 S. Huron Street, Ypsilanti, Michigan…just minutes from Ann Arbor and metro Detroit.

From the moment you enter the Wild Turkey Tavern you will be awed by its history and ambiance. The 1700’s New England traveler’s tavern was a gift to the house from Henry Ford. It was originally purchased for Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan.

Chef Chad Clay of Aubrey’s Tavern caters the splendid period lunches while Kay Brown, dressed in costume, enchants you with her Celtic Harp.

The communal dining and intimacy of the tavern lends itself to inspired conversation. As you are getting to know your tablemates, Innkeepers, Marla and Joe, will serve you clothed in period costume. Expect a hearty stew, shepherd’s pie, or other main course, topped off by Chef Chad’s cobbler.

Personalize your own event. Reservations are accepted for parties of 12 - 25. **

Here I am keying on tavern and the location Ypsilanti. By using the Keyword tavern in the text and the location Ypsilanti I am targeting local traffic to our historic Tavern.

When the keywords Ypsilanti tavern are typed into the top 3 search engines our tavern is displayed within the first few listings.

There are also some work done in the code with Meta Tags placing our key words into the Meta tag description, Meta tag key words and the Title.

The title tag

The title tag is the text displayed at the very top of your browser in Fire Fox and Internet Explorer. The search engine robots or spiders look at this text to see how it relates to the current search. It is extremely important to use this title text with your key words as well as your business type. Being able to put the key work in your URL is a good idea.

An example of one for an Ann Arbor bed and breakfast is “Ann arbor bed and breakfast, Ann Arbor bed breakfast”

You can also incorporate your business name into this text as well. In the case above they chose not to, but it would not hurt if you have enough space left over. Most search engine robots limit this text to 60 spaces. Make sure this text relates to the theme of the web page you are putting the title on.  Each page on your website should have a unique title.

The keyword tag

Not all search engine robots look at key word tags but many do so you can’ forget them. Here is where you need to think of all the variations that can be used to call your product or service.  Here you have 120 spaces to work with. For my bed and breakfast I use “Ann Arbor Bed and Breakfast Inn, bed breakfast lodging Ann Arbor Michigan, Ann Arbor b & b, Ypsilanti Mi B & B, Bed and breakfast Ypsilanti, Historic b & b, Historic Ypsilanti Bed and breakfast

Here I have researched the different terms or Key words customers may use in searching for a bed and breakfast in our area, being customers must travel to our location to use this service.

Next we will talk about choosing the right key words to generate traffic to your web site

The Tags for your site description

And Tags for pictures in your website.
